International Development: Acting Turkmen president promises changes

Turkmenistan' acting president, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, has proposed measures that he claims will lift the nation from its isolation.

The New York Times reports Berdymukhammedov promised a range of changes affecting agriculture, social assistance programs, education and the economy.

The proposals, also include giving students access to foreign universities - including those in the United States - sending doctors to Western hospitals to acquire modern skills and extending primary schooling to 10 years. He also vowed to create a culture of entrepreneurship.
