State press reports that China has approved a $900 million Taiwan investment in the south-western city of Chongqing for the assembly of eight-inch (200 millimetre) microchips.
China Business News said the government had given approval for Taiwan's ProMOS Technologies Inc last week, to build the plant for eight-inch wafers, which use relatively simple chip technologies.
The project was approved by China's National Development and Reform Commission.
