International Development: Poverty reduced in Sri Lanka

The latest report by the World Bank reports that poverty in Sri Lanka declined from 26% to 23% in the period between 1990 and 2002. The report shows that poverty in urban areas has decreased by 80%.

However, poverty in rural areas decreased by only 5%. Poverty increased in plantation areas by 50%.

The report pointed to unequal growth in the country and recommended infrastructure development in remote areas to bring growth to those parts as well.
