On Sunday March 18, the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be celebrating its 75th birthday. On that day the bridge will be traffic-free to allow Sydneysiders to mark the occasion by walking across it.
It also gives Sydneysiders the chance to indulge in what is increasingly becoming their favourite past-time - whining.
Whatever happens in this city you can be sure there are people out there busily looking for problems and something to whine about. When they find it, their little hands spurred into action by their little brains, reach for the phone and dial talk-back radio.
The 75th anniversary of the bridge does not escape their attention.
"Hello John - is that you John? I want to talk about the bridge and the walk across it. I'm 75 and I can't go on the walk because it's too long for me at my age."
I kid you not. Sydney's senior citizens are complaining that the 3km walk across the bridge is too long for them to be able to participate - and it's all the organisers fault.
I am not exactly sure what they want the organisers, (who of course are now the "bad guys") to do about it. Perhaps they think the City Fathers can find a way to cut a kilometre or so off the bridge between now and Sunday?
There are many things I would like to do but I am not physically able to. I don't blame myself, I don't blame age - and I don't blame anyone else. It's just a fact of life. I sure as hell wouldn't bother to phone up talk-back radio to have a good old whine about it. If I ever come the stage when all I want to do is dedicate my life to the gentle art of whining, I wont walk across the bridge - I'll throw myself off the bloody thing!
Wherever you may be - be safe.
