Goodnight from Sydney: Nov 7

Driving has never interested me - I don't drive and have never owned a car. In fact cars have never interested me either - with two exceptions. Alfa Romeos and Jaguars.

My liking for Alfa Romeos is largely due to my father. He owned a succession of Alfa Romeos in the UK, the last being an Alfa Romeo Spider.

Gawd love him. If ever a man was so unsuited for a high performance sports car - it was my father. In all his years of driving he never had an accident or any sort of traffic infringement. The nearest he came to road rage was when a French onion seller on a bicycle overtook him and gave him a Harvey Smith sign. Dad was not definitely not the sort of person you associate with fast cars - or fast driving!

On the other hand, if I were to own a car, my feeling is why not go the whole hog. Today I saw a car I fell in love with. A Jaguar XK convertible.

I can quite easily visualise myself roaring down the highway, wind blowing through my hair, (the other one fell out last night) with "Born To Be Wild" and "Bat Out of Hell" blasting from the sound system - providing I could get someone to program the damn thing for me.

Sitting next to me would be a tall, sleek blonde with curves as stylish as the car. Hopefully she would come pre-programmed and complete with an instruction manual.

But why bother with a car when a 52 seater Mercedes, complete with driver, is available right outside my front door. Even the femme fatale can be accommodated - and if she is over 60, I can get her on half-fare!

Wherever you may be - be safe!
