Industrial Relations: Greece faces severe fuel shortages due to strike action

Greece is facing widespread fuel shortages due to an ongoing strike by the owners of private fuel tanker trucks.

Tanker truck owners, along with owners of other heavy goods vehicles, have been on strike for a week. They are demanding rate increases of 13 percent to cover escalating costs incurred because of rising oil prices. The government has offered 5 percent.

The tanker truckers' union federation is due to hold its general assembly on Monday to decide the next course of action. An extended strike would almost certainly cause severe problems.
