Nuclear Issues: Lithuania to negotiate with EU regarding nuclear power plant

Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas has said Lithuania and the European Union will hold talks regarding extending the operation of the Ignalina nuclear power plant.

Lithuania has already held discussions with the EU on this issue, explaining the likely effects of the closure of the plant, the prime minister said during an interview with local radio in his country's capital of Vilnius. "The EU well understands our situation," he said.

The Ignalina plant is the only nuclear power plant in the Baltic region. According to an agreement with the EU, Lithuania closed the first reactor for safety reasons and is scheduled to close the second one at the end of 2009.
