Lithuania has already held discussions with the EU on this issue, explaining the likely effects of the closure of the plant, the prime minister said during an interview with local radio in his country's capital of Vilnius. "The EU well understands our situation," he said.
The Ignalina plant is the only nuclear power plant in the Baltic region. According to an agreement with the EU, Lithuania closed the first reactor for safety reasons and is scheduled to close the second one at the end of 2009.
