Sittwe, Arakan State: Security has been beefed up in southern Arakan including the capital Sittwe by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) authorities as of August 2, apprehending another uprising like the September 2007 saffron revolution in the ensuing 20th anniversary of the 1998 people's uprising, said an aide of the police in Sittwe.
The SPDC authorities have information that the people of southern Arakan State will strike on August 8.
As a result, the SPDC authorities have tightened security measure in southern Arakan such as---Mrauk U, Kyaukpru. Rambree, Taunggupe, Sandoway townships---including Sittwe since 7 pm on August 2.
On August 3, at around 8 am, security was tightened at places where the public gather like markets, bus stations, jetty, some pagodas and temples, U Oo Dhama Park and other famous shrines. People are barred from going to Buddhist temples in the early morning for prayer. The security forces are searching for Buddhist monks who participated during the saffron revolution, according to a local people from Sittwe.
People are being asked questions by the security forces in Sittwe while the townspeople are going to the market or to other places. People wearing red shirts and red hats have been asked questions more than other people by the security forces. The authorities have information through their intelligence network that the people will demonstrate on August 8, wearing red shirts and red hats.
There has been no arrest till now. But, the security forces have been watching people with hawk eyes as the 20th anniversary of 8888 approaches.
