Twenty years ago, on this day of 8th August 1988, millions of Burmese people took to the streets across the country demanding an end to long military rule, restoration of democracy and human rights in Burma. But the military started brutal crackdowns and killed an estimated 3000 peaceful demonstrators nationwide. Till today there has been no independent investigation conducted against the military for these brutal acts.
The ruling military SPDC continues to suppress the hopes and aspiration of the Burmese people, and subject them to grave human rights violations, arrest, widespread detention of political dissidents, killing, loot, torture forced labour, forced relocation, destruction of villages causing great political and humanitarian crises in the country. The country’s education system is failing to produce skilled and semi-skilled manpower and health service is the lowest in the world.
The military has created great political humanitarian crises in the country. Particularly the military has created an impossible situation for a large number of people, showing no concern to the plight of the victims of the devastating cyclone Nagris. All these push factors also cause constant refugees’ flights into neighbouring countries posing a threat to regional and international peace and security.
We call on the international community, particularly China, India and the members of the ASEAN to pressurise military SPDC to fully cooperate with the United Nations, to restore all fundamental human rights and freedoms, to cease crimes against humanity committed in Rohingya and other ethnic areas, release of all political prisoners-- including Daw Aunt San Suu Kyi, U Kyaw Min and his family members. We also demand to restore the citizenship of Rohingya people.
