Iran: Over 1,000 antique smugglers arrested last year

IRNA reports 1040 antique smugglers and illegal excavators were arrested last year, said the commander of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization's Protection Unit.

Announcing this, Brigadier General Abbas Ali Rouhi said that some 168 bands engaged in smuggling antiques and illegal excavations were busted last year.

"Some 495 packages of precious items were also seized," he said.

The large number of offenses in the past pertained to illegal excavations, Rouhi said, adding that most of them happened in Semnan and Fars provinces.
