Latvia: Low turn out causes failure of right to sack legislature referendum

Low voter turn out has caused the failure of a Latvian referendum on whether to give voters the right to sack parliament outside regular elections. Only 39 percent of Latvian voters went to the polls, short of the threshold of 50 percent eligible electorate needed for a constitutional change.

However, an overwhelming "yes" vote showed a popular discontent with the ruling coalition, after allegations of high-level corruption and amid an economic slowdown combined with soaring prices in the Baltic country.

The national election commission reported, nearly 97 percent of those who did vote supported the measure while only 3 percent voted against it.
