Russia: Five militants killed in southern Russia

Itar-Tass news agency has today reported that five militants were killed Thursday in a security operation in the Southern Russian republic of Dagestan.

Police and security forces of the republic conducted a counter-terrorist operation in the town of Khasavyurt, where the militants were blocked in a house. The militants refused to surrender and opened fire at the law enforcers.

All five militants, including a gang leader, were killed and two security officers were injured in the fighting, a spokesman of the interior ministry said.

Dagestan has been troubled by violence linked to rebels based in the neighboring North Caucasus republic of Chechnya
