Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Schweiger said, "Fanatics whom I put on the same level with al-Qaeda, vote for the Republican party."
"The religious right in the Midwest (of the US) is as pig-headed (as al-Qaeda). And it runs the party," he added.
The 44-year-old Schweiger stressed that the Republican party represented "the interests of the financial, arms and oil industries.
Schweiger turned down the role of the German soldier, who shoots Tom Hanks's character (Captain John H. Miller) in Saving Private Ryan (1998) because he had reservations about the role's effect on his image at the American audience.
