The EU is to open Migration Management Centres in Africa in an effort to combat illegal immigration.

Louis Michel, the EU's development commissioner, opened the first in Bamako the capital of Mali

"This centre paves the way for managing migration flows more effectively," said Michel. "Instead of demonising the migration phenomenon, it should be supported, structured and managed optimally."
