Peru: Peru's Prime Minister set to resign

Xinhua reports Peru's Prime Minister Yehude Simon said Tuesday he will resign after settling a dispute over Indian rights in the Amazon, local media said.

"I will leave as soon as everything has been calmed down, which should be in the coming weeks," he told the Lima radio station RPP.

Simon has led negotiations with Indians protesting decrees that they say would lead to uncontrolled exploitation of their lands for oil, gas and other resources.

The protests became violent as clashes between police and the protesters killed 34 according to official figures, but the indigenous leaders said many more were killed.
