Iran: Ahmadinejad wants opposition leaders prosecuted

Ahmadinejad Calls For Prosecution Of Opposition Leaders

Iran's President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has called for opposition leaders to be punished over the unrest sparked by his disputed election victory.

The call came in a speech to a crowd of thousands before Friday Prayers in Tehran.

Ahmadinejad said that activists put on trial on charges related to the unrest should not be the only ones punished.

He said that the "main legal action should be against the leaders and those who directed the incidents following the election."

He said "there should be no immunity for these leaders."

He did not specifically name opposition leaders.

Defeated presidential candidates Mir Hossein Musavi and Mehdi Karrubi, backed by former President Mohammad Khatami, allege Ahmadinejad's June 12 election victory was fraudulent.

Iran has put more than 140 people, including a number of senior opposition figures, on trial on charges related to the massive post-election protests.
