Iran: Executions rise sharply since election

Radio Netherlands reports there has been a huge increase in the number of executions in Iran since June’s presidential elections, according to Amnesty International. Between the 12 June elections and last week’s inauguration of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – a period of a little over 50 days – 115 executions have been recorded.

It is highly likely that the number of executions is much higher than human rights organisation Amnesty reports, as its survey is based on official Iranian government records and media reports. However, these sources do not reveal details of every execution in Iran. The total number of confirmed executions in 2009 so far stands at around 320, says the human rights group.

The 115 executions known to have been carried out since June 12th include 20 on July 4th and 24 on the day President Ahmadinejad took office, last Wednesday. Most executions took place at the notorious Rejai Shahr Prison (photo) in the city of Karaj.
