Nigeria: Ukrainian arms plane released

Xinhua reports the Nigerian federal government has ordered the release of the arms-carrying Ukrainian aircraft almost two months after it was grounded at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in northern Nigeria's Kano State for security reasons.

The aircraft was released on the orders of President Umaru Yar'Adua, according to the reports of the Lagos-based Compass newspaper on Wednesday.

The aircraft was intercepted by eagle-eyed security operatives when it stopped over to refuel on June 17 and it was found that it was carrying arms and ammunition.

Upon interrogation, the crew said the consignment on board was meant for the government in Equatorial Guinea.

The authorities in Malabo, the Equatorial Guinean capital and the Ukrainian government admitted to the mission of the aircraft and its crew members.
