Cuba: Top UN official describes US imprisonment of Cuban Five, as "absurd and a legal aberration"

Xinhua - President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann discussed the need for change at the world body and the case of five Cubans imprisoned in the U.S. during a visit to Cuba.

During a meeting with Cuba's interim Foreign Minister Marcelino Medina on Thursday, d'Escoto talked about the UN's role at a new historical time.

Talking about the challenges faced by the world body, d'Escoto said the UN must make changes to keep pace with the current world," The UN has to change, beyond the reforms," he said.

"Climate change is a threat even bigger than the entire world economy," d'Escoto, who will finish his term on Sept. 24, said.

d'Escoto began a five-day working visit to Cuba on Tuesday when he met with relatives of five Cubans who were accused of espionage and have been imprisoned in the United States since 1998.

Describing the case as absurd and a "legal aberration", d'Escoto said he would devote himself to ensure that justice was served in the case.
