Middle East: Israel and Egypt close to Gilad Shalit deal

Haaretz correspondent Jack Khouri reports the London-based Arabic language newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, claims Israel and Egypt are close to reaching an understanding on a prisoner exchange deal involving captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and on the renewal of Mideast peace talks.

The report quoted Egyptian and Israeli officials meeting as saying that the two countries are on the verge of finalizing understandings on everything connected to a prisoner exchange and the renewal of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

The officials said that in accordance with the current understandings, the agreements will be made public following a meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Sunday
