Spain: Catalonian village votes for independence

Radio Netherlands reports the residents of the Catalonian village of Arenys de Munt have voted for independence of their region in a referendum.

No less than 96 percent of the voters want the autonomous region of Catalonia to secede from Spain. Turnout in the referendum was 41 percent. About 100 right-wing protesters who want Catalonia to remain an integral part of Spain held a demonstration in Arenys de Munt.

The Spanish government tried to ban the referendum in the village of 8,000 inhabitants
