Iraq: UN rejects Fijian Colonel because of "credible allegations of serious human rights violations" against him

ABC Radio - The United Nations has confirmed to Radio Australia that Fijian Colonel Pita Driti was rejected as Commander of Fiji's military contingent in Iraq because of "credible allegations of serious human rights violations" against him.

Fiji's push to send Pita Driti to head its UN contingent in Iraq came to light late last year.

The UN peacekeeping office in New York has confirmed it was informed in November last year about the plans.

It says it advised the Fijian diplomatic mission in New York that the organisation would not accept any person alleged to have committed human rights abuses or other illegal activities.
