Thailand: Stateless people to recieve free medical treatment

Source: Royal Thai Goverment - The Public Health Ministry plans to allocate 500 million THB to advance the health card scheme for stateless people.

Public Health Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit and his team, yesterday traveled to the northern Mae Hong Son province to monitor problematic medical provision for stateless people residing along the border area. Mr Jurin claimed that these immigrants had caused problems with local hospitals as they could not afford their hospital bills.

The Minister pledged to adopt resolutions to enable stateless people to recieve medical treatment under the health card scheme. He expected at least 15 million THB to be used in the program per year.

Mr Jurin said the Ministry would file a fund request of 500 million baht to the Cabinet for approval, to be used in medical service provided to 4.5 million of stateless people. He expected the whole process to begin in April 2010 after approval by the National Health Security Office on the third week of February and the final approval by the Cabinet.
