South Africa: AWB retracts, "declaration of war" statement

Radio Netherlands - In South Africa, the Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB) has retracted a statement in which it called the killing of its leader Eugène Terre'blanche a declaration of war.

The white supremacist leader was allegedly killed by two young black farm workers on Saturday after a dispute over their pay. The police say the killing was not politically motivated.

AWB spokesperson Pieter Steyn retracted earlier threats about racial violence made by the movement's secretary general immediately after the killing. Mr Steyn said the threats were made in anger and that "the AWB is not going to engage in any form of violent retaliation to avenge Mr Terre'blanche's death".
