Hitchen on "Don't Ask Don't Tell"

Recently I have been seeing numerous of press releases by self appointed, self obsessed guardians of morality such as "family" groups and right wing "veterans" groups, regarding the intent of the democratically elected President of the United States of America, Home of The Brave, Land of The Free, to overturn the law on homosexuals in the military known as "Don't Ask Don't Tell."

Statements such as, "The hard left of the Democratic Party, led by President Obama and Speaker Pelosi, have chosen to put a political constituency with a radical agenda - the homosexual lobby - ahead of the well-being of our men and women in uniform" and "Unfortunately, for our brave servicemen and women, the liberal majority chose to advance the social agenda of a radical special interest group".

Those little gems from the Family Research Council, are an insult to the many gays who have served, fought and died in the name of Home of The Brave, Land of The Free. It incorrectly implies that only "straight" servicemen can fight with bravery, show courage under fire, give their life for God, Country and Halliburton. Why is that so many groups with the word "family" in the title are nothing more than a bunch of archaic, bigoted people trying to stop 21st century social agendas in order to push their 19th century narrow minded so called "values"?

Whenever I read negative comments about the, "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, I am reminded of the old Jody Miller song -

Home of the brave, land of the free why won't you let him be what he wants to be http://www.lyricstime.com/jody-miller-home-of-the-brave-lyrics.html

Because until you do, and accept everyone for what they are, regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion, colour, you can spare me the self-righteous, hypocritical, macho John Wayne crap about fighting for democracy, freedom and justice.

Such real and often hard fought for values should be applicable to all - not just those approved by self-serving agenda pushers such as the morally bankrupt, Family Research Council
