Equatorial Guinea: President tries to explain speedy executions

Source: Republic of Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea's (Republica de Guinea Ecuatorial) President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo today released the following official statement:

The events that occurred on February 17, 2009 in Equatorial Guinea are related to an assassination attempt against me and an attempt to overthrow my Government by members of the National Armed Forces in collaboration with mercenaries and terrorists. Our Army had the responsibility of conducting a trial to judge those implicated. These individuals were convicted and executed immediately due to the imminent danger against me, my family, and my government.

I greatly lament that there are estimations of faults in the legal process and the prompt execution of the convicted. We hope the United States of America and the rest of the world understand the severity of the danger of the events that occurred on February 17, 2009 to the national security of Equatorial Guinea as well as my personal security. Equatorial Guinea still needs assistance from the United States of America and others in good faith to help our Government implement the reforms program that I recently presented in Cape Town.
