Sri Lanka: Government to continue relief operations

The government is continuing relief operations providing further assistance for flood affected families.

Addressing journalists today to clarify the present position on the disaster relief operations, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera is revealed that 287,871 families are displaced by the adverse weather condition in 14 Districts if the Island. The number of persons impacted is one million 81 thousand 819 persons. It is further revealed, 23 deaths had been reported and one had gone missing.

During the media conference Minister stated that 2680 families are totally damaged while 15,274 were partially damaged. 591 Camps had been established and 83,722 families have taken shelter in these camps. Minister further said that seven hospitals in the Batticaloa District are under water.

Referring to the grants provided, the Minister said that 138 million rupees had been released to Government Agents for 13 days while another 75 million rupees will be released tomorrow. He emphasized that the President without any hesitation took the initiative of granting the necessary assistance.
