Sudan: UNAMID denied access to conflict areas

The Joint Special Representative of the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Ibrahim Gambari, has said that the mission has been denied access to some area which witnessed clashes in northern Darfur recently.

Addressing the Security Council on Wednesday Gambari said that the mission and humanitarian agencies should be allowed access to conflict areas and IDP camps. Fighting began last Tuesday between the government forces and the Sudan Liberation Movement (Minni Minawwi faction) in Tabit and Tutu mari villages in the state of north Darfur causing casualties on both sides.

In related news, the Commissioner of Al Dalli town in Sennar state, Al Bakhit Mustafa, has described the condition of thousands of Arab nomad returnees from the south as terrible. Speaking to Radio Miraya the commissioner said the returnees, currently living in camps, are in urgent need of water, shelter and health services.

He added that the state government has established a mobile hospital for the camps.
