The European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Azerbaijan.
The European Union Delegation:
· Deplores the recent demolition, on 11th August in the evening in downtown Baku, of the Institute for Peace and Democracy's office, a regular partner of the international community. The issue is aggravated by the fact that the destruction took place in spite of a Court Judgement of 24th May by the Administrative and Economic Court N°1 of Nasimi District and during the absence of the owner of the building from the country and without possibility to take private and professional documents and belongings from the premises.
· Will continue to closely monitor and report on domestic developments in Azerbaijan, notably in the domain of evictions, expropriations and general respect for property rights, which are important elements of the Eastern Partnership, and offers its cooperation to discuss the best international practices that can be used in this area.
· Reiterates the great importance it attaches to all fundamental rights, including respect for property, and to the adherence to the due legal process.
· Calls on the appropriate authorities of Azerbaijan to activate an open dialogue with citizens who are potentially affected by demolitions, and to find fair and mutually agreed solutions thereto.
