Opinion: Afghanistan - All for nothing at all

I constantly see press releases and statements from Western spokespersons, (usually military) informing me how well the Afghan security forcers are progressing, (that's when they are not shooting ISAF personnel of course).

The attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, an area under the control of Afghan Security forces, demonstrates that they are far from being able to provide a secure, stable, Taliban free environment. When foreign forces finally pull out of Afghanistan, the Taliban will be back with a vengeance.

In other words, all the mayhem, death and destruction that has occurred since foreign forces marched in uninvited under the shoddy banner of "War on Terror" has all been for nothing.

Zilch.

The Generals will get their shiny medals, the politicians will get their peace prizes, and the people of Afghanistan will get a country once again destroyed by foreign intervention.

Oh yes, there are those who will tell me the Western invasion has been a success. They will cite the number of Taliban or Al-Qaeda killed, how many of their top commanders have been captured or "taken out".

So what? Kill one another pops up to replace him, till he is "eliminated" and so it goes...

No foreign power has ever been able to claim victory in Afghanistan, and I doubt they ever will.

The time has come to let Afghanistan sort out its own problems. Western wars are not their wars, and Afghan wars are not ours. Not because we do not care, but Afghanistan is unique, and Afghanistan is the only one who may be able to sort out the mess successive invaders have bestowed upon them.
