Opinion: Troy Davis - The needle and the damage done

At approximately 13:08 Sydney time, Troy Davis was executed for the murder of off-duty policeman Mark MacPhail.

Over the years, and especially the last week, much has been written about the lack of evidence against Davis. So much so in fact, it can be argued that on the balance of probability, Davis was not directly responsible for the death of Mr. MacPhail.

If that is the case -
  • It means that someone else is directly responsible for the slaying of a man who went to the aid of another.
  • In addition, that person is also directly responsible for the death of Troy Davis.
  • Two innocent men dead - two men denied justice.
  • The person responsible walks free and will now quite likely never be brought before a court of law.
If that is the case -

The lawmakers, the legislators, the fine defenders of liberty and justice, must make sure it never happens again. It has happened all too often in the past.

If they fail to address such serious and deadly issues, "Justice" will be stripped of credibility and become just another fine word used without true meaning or sincerity, for those who make fine speeches to sell their shoddy goods to voters, donors, sponsors and backers.
