Germany's most prominent Middle East expert Peter Scholl-Latour blasted western hypocrisy in the wake of the 'Saudi-led crackdown' on Bahrain's freedom movement. In an article for the Munich-based Focus weekly news magazine, Scholl-Latour slammed western silence on the Saudi invasion of Bahrain and the ongoing repression in the tiny Persian Gulf country.
He lambasted western governments for not protesting the Saudi military invasion of
Bahrain, saying it 'violated international law.'
Pointing out that the West likes to portray itself as a defender of human rights and the people's right to self-determination, Scholl-Latour accused the West of 'hypocritical silence' on the issue of Bahrain.
Western governments did not issue a strong condemnation of Manama's use of violence and intimidation since mid-March, when Saudi Arabia sent more than 1,000 troops into Bahrain to help the Al-Khalifa regime quell the protest movement that started in February asking for democratic reforms.
The western refusal to condemn massive human rights abuses committed by Bahraini security forces while condemning such abuses in Libya and Yemen has undermined any credibility it had with Bahrainis.
International human right groups have time and again complained that the West has kept mum amid reports that Bahrain's Sunni-led government is waging a violent and bloody crackdown — destroying Shiite mosques, illegally detaining and torturing dissidents, attacking medical personnel to prevent them from treating wounded protesters, abusing women and girls, and expelling journalists from the Persian Gulf kingdom.
