Philippines: Update: Report on the Internally Displaced Persons in Basilan and Zamboanga Sibugay Province

  • Dwindling peace and order situation due to recent armed encounter between government forces and rebel groups in Brgy Carnbug, Al-barka, Basilan last October 18, 2011 and in Brgy Samonte, Talusan, Zamboanga Sibugay Province last October 22, 2011 have forced the displaced families to seek temporary refuge to relatives for safety.

  • A total of 4,003 families I 19,481 persons have been displaced due to the conflict in Basilan (1,586 families I 7,888 persons) and in Zamboanga Sibugay (2,417 families I 11, 593 persons). Please see Tab A for details

  • In Basilan, one civilian, namely Abdulkahal Abdasal, 53 years old, was killed while two other civilians, namely: Nurfa Sappalam, 10 years old, and;
    Omar Sappalum, 35 years old, were wounded. The conflict also partially damaged two (2) houses while totally destroying three (3) other houses and one (1) school building

  • In Zamboanga Sibugay, four (4) were killed in Alicia, eight (8) were injured (3 in Payao, 5 in Alicia), while one (1) is missing. The identities of the casualties are still being verified
