Bangladesh: Dhaka's water shortage could sink city

Dhaka is running out of water, which means citizens are going thirsty, but the hunt for the precious liquid in the ground beneath the sprawling city also has a serious side effect: the capital is sinking.

At a rate of almost 13 millimeters a year, Dhaka is going down. It may not seem like much, but the process is causing buildings to collapse and the ground is not solid enough for construction.

The sinking ground also causes more pressure on tectonic plates, and scientists say a major earthquake is overdue.

Al Jazeera's Nicholas Haque reports from Dhaka.
