Indigenous communities are an important block in the Mexican presidential elections, they make up almost 10 per cent of the population.
However they are among the poorest in the country; according to government statistics 40.5 per cent of indigenous people suffer from malnutrition.
Despite this they are among those who have gained least from changes in the Mexican Presidency.
