Berlin,IRNA European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Monday expressed 'sadness' over Saturday's tragic earthquake in northwestern Iran.
'I am saddened by the tragic news of the terrible earthquake that hit orthern Iran, causing
many victims and widespread damage in the region,' Ashton said in a press statement
released in Brussels.
'I express my sincere sympathy to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” she added.
Two strong earthquakes in the towns of Ahar and Varzeqan struck within 11 minutes of each other on Saturday, registering magnitudes of 6.3 and 6.4 degrees on open-ended Richrer scale.
Hundreds of people were killed and thousands more were injured and left
homeless as a result of the devastating quakes.
