Pakistan: Pakistanis see US as 'biggest enemy'

Islamabad, Sept 6, IRNA -- The majority of Pakistanis consider the United States as the biggest enemy and view China as the friendly country towards Pakistan, findings of a survey said Thursday.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across four provinces was asked: 'Among the states listed on this round card which would you consider as Pakistan’s best friend? (Give one answer)'

Responding to the question, 67 percent of the respondents said they believed China to be Pakistan's best friend, seven percent believed the United States, four percent believed India, two percent believed Russia and one percent believed Afghanistan whereas 14 percent believed Iran to be Pakistan’s best friend, and the United States as the most hostile nation towards the country, according to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan.

In a follow-up question, the respondents were asked: 'Among the states listed on this round card which would you consider as Pakistan's biggest enemy? (Give one answer)'

Responding to this question, 49 percent of the respondents said they believed the United States to be Pakistan's biggest enemy, 24 percent believed India, four percent believed Russia, four percent believed Afghanistan and one percent believed Iran whereas one percent said they believed China to be Pakistan's biggest enemy.

These findings are based on a nationwide opinion poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The sample is chosen through stratified area probability sampling and is representative of the adult population of Pakistan and comprises a cross-section of men and women belonging to various regional, age and socio-economic backgrounds.

The study was carried out among a sample of 2,685 men and women in rural and urban areas of all the four provinces of the country between July 27 and August 4. The error margin is estimated to be approximately ±2-3 percent at 95 percent confidence level.
